When Kei Kurono is killed, he thus finds himself caught in such a game; a test of his skills, morals, and will to survive. After an accident, teens Kei and Kato awake in an unfamiliar room with other strangers. Across from them sits a mysterious black sphere: the Gantz.
Opening to reveal unusual weaponry and suits, the sphere orders the group to kill an alien. Kei, Kato and the others must decide whether to obey.
The large alien exacts his revenge by picking off members of the group. Kei discovers that his Gantz suit gives him special powers.
Nishi finishes the job and explains the rules of the game: anyone still alive will return to the room and be revived. But Kato is severely wounded.
Finished with the first round, Kei Kurono, Kato and Kei Kishimoto attempt to go back to their regular lives but discover things have changed.
Kei Kishimoto asks to stay overnight in Kei Kurono's place, as she has nowhere else to go. Kato worries for his little brother's safety.
Cruel treatment at home and nasty threats from school bullies push Kato's patience to the breaking point. Kishimoto asks Kei for a favor.
